The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD (model A067) is the first model in a new class of ultra-telephoto zoom lenses for mirrorless camera systems with full-frame sensors. Its 8x zoom covers an exceptionally versatile focal length range: from a 50mm standard lens with a relatively wide angle of view and normal depth of field, to a 400mm ultra-telephoto, whose narrow field of view allows for greatly enlarged imaging. Despite its wide focal length range, this new ultra-telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless full-frame cameras is compactly built like a conventional 100-400mm zoom lens. The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 is remarkably compact, measuring just 183.4mm in length and weighing in at a light 1,155g, yet offers unparalleled performance at all focal lengths.
The optical construction of the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 incorporates multiple special glass elements that ensure high imaging performance throughout the zoom range. The Lens features Tamron's proprietary VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) autofocus technology, which is based on an exceptionally quiet and fast-acting linear motor. The VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilizer, also a Tamron development, helps to achieve sharp images in low-light situations. The short close-up distance of the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 allows macro photography at a scale of 1:2 (0.5x magnification). At focal length 50mm, the shortest focusing distance is only 25cm.
The new ultra-telephoto zoom Lens inspires with high ease of use and a revised body design. The barrel has a scratch-resistant surface and sits comfortably in the hand even during longer shooting sessions, while the adjustment elements are optimally placed and can be operated intuitively. Like most lenses in the Tamron E-series, the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 features the standard filter size (Ø 67 mm), so the filter and protective cap fit all lenses in the series.
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 is compatible with the TAMRON Lens Utility, which allows customization of the lens' operation. For the first time, the "Focus Limiter" function is also available here, which can be used to limit the focus range in order to achieve even faster focusing. For use in conjunction with a tripod, a tripod clamp (Arca-Swiss compatible) is available as an optional accessory.
Product Highlights
1. 50-400mm 8x zoom: from standard to ultra-telephoto
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 is the first in a new class of ultra-telephoto zoom lenses. For the first time, an 8x zoom is used in a Lens, spanning the focal length range from 50mm to 400mm. Lenses with a 50 mm focal length are considered "standard lenses" for 35 mm cameras, since images taken with them are characterized by a depth of field that is perceived as normal. In addition, they offer a fairly large field of view that also includes the surroundings, and their short focusing distance enables expressive close-ups. The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 is therefore suitable for a wide range of subjects from landscape and wildlife photography to sports shots, portraits and group photos.
2.Consistently high imaging performance throughout the zoom range
The optical construction of the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 comprises 24 elements in 18 groups, including several special optical glass elements. Two XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and three LD (Low Dispersion) elements, a GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens and a hybrid aspherical lens provide comprehensive correction of optical aberrations such as chromatic aberrations (axial chromatic aberrations). BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) lens surface coating effectively reduces ghosting and flare for high detail and brilliance, even when shooting in backlit situations.
3.Fast and precise VXD autofocus
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 features a very fast and precise VXD autofocus, driven by a powerful and virtually silent linear motor. It is also particularly suitable for sharp images in dynamic shooting situations, such as when tracking a moving subject with the camera during sporting events or wildlife photography. Due to the barely audible AF operation noise, the Lens is ideal for photo and video shooting in situations where absolute silence is required.
4.VC image stabilization
Despite its remarkably compact dimensions, the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 features Tamron's proprietary VC image stabilizer. The system compensates for camera movement, minimizing blur. When shooting video at focal lengths up to 100mm, an artificial intelligence independently selects the most appropriate compensation characteristic for the situation.
5.Advanced functionality
1) USB port for TAMRON Lens Utility
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 has a USB port that can be used to connect the Lens to a computer via a TAMRON connection cable2 . Using the TAMRON Lens Utility software, various lens settings can then be adjusted to suit individual shooting or filming needs, depending on the shooting situation.
2) NEW: "Focus Limiter" can be adjusted via TAMRON Lens Utility
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 is compatible with the new "Focus Limiter" function of TAMRON Lens Utility. With this focus limiter, the active focus range can be reduced so that focusing is faster. The function also prevents the autofocus from jumping to close objects that obscure the main subject.

6.Compact and lightweight design
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 is amazingly light and compact for an 8x ultra telephoto zoom. Only 183.4mm long and weighing 1,155g, it is comparable to a conventional 100-400mm telephoto zoom. It's easy to pack and carry, and scores high marks for convenient handling during extended-duration assignments such as wildlife or sports photography.
7.Close-up photography with maximum magnification of 1:2 at 50 mm
The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 offers an exceptionally short close-up distance for an ultra-telephoto zoom lens. At 50mm focal length, close-up shots are possible from a distance of 25cm and down to a magnification of 1:2. At 400 mm, subjects as close as 1.5 m away can be focused, allowing very dynamic shots. Since no lens change is required for close-up shots, many creative possibilities open up.
