With the LUMIX DC-G9, Panasonic presents its new top model in the field of mirrorless system cameras (DSLM). With its wide range of shooting functions, extremely fast response times and solid, compact design, the camera is particularly recommended for reportage, action, sports and wildlife photography. Equipped with a 20.3 megapixel digital live MOS sensor without a low-pass filter, the new top photo model achieves the highest image quality of all LUMIX cameras to date thanks to improved resolution, gradation and color reproduction. A new high-resolution mode also enables 80 megapixel photos in JPEG and RAW format.

The significantly improved body I.S. (image stabilizer) of the LUMIX G9 allows up to 6.5 EV steps longer freehand exposure times. This is made possible by an even more precise analysis of camera shake under different shooting conditions. This uses information not only from the gyro sensor, but also from the image sensor and an acceleration sensor.
The fast, precise autofocus with DFD technology achieves the fastest AF speed of any camera of its type*2 at 0.04s*1. With its high tracking performance, the autofocus of the LUMIX G9 also offers the best conditions for unerring subject tracking.
The LUMIX G9 delivers the fastest continuous shooting in the DSLM camera class with 20 fps (AFC) / 60 fps (AFS) in full 20.3 megapixel resolution*2. In addition to normal continuous shooting, the 6K/4K photo functions are available if required.

With an extraordinarily high magnification of approx. 1.66x / 0.83x (35mm KB), the LUMIX G9 also has the largest viewfinder in its class*2. The viewfinder image works without dark phases during high-speed continuous shooting. Night mode and an AF point magnifier function are also integrated.
For the first time in a LUMIX camera, a large, illuminated status display is also integrated on the top of the Body for faster camera control and easy familiarization for DSLR newcomers. Image control on the back of the camera is via a rotating and tilting 7.5 cm LCD monitor with a 3:2 aspect ratio and high-resolution 1.04 million pixels. The LUMIX G9 is equipped with a dual SD card drive for fast UHS-II cards to store the images.
To deliver the best results even under the most adverse shooting conditions, the front and rear frames of the LUMIX G9 body are made of magnesium alloy. In addition, the G9 is characterized by a dust and splash-proof construction and is frost-proof down to -10ºC. Thanks to USB charging, the camera is also independent of a fixed power supply.
The LUMIX G9 offers Bluetooth and WiFi® connectivity for convenient wireless remote camera control and instant image sharing. 1.The highest image quality of all LUMIX cameras
With the LUMIX G9, Panasonic has further improved the outstanding image quality of the LUMIX GH5. The new top model thus achieves the best image quality of all previous LUMIX G DSLM cameras. The 20.3-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor without low-pass filter brings out the best in the performance of the Lens. The Venus Engine image processor with its multi-pixel luminance analysis and intelligent detail processing delivers equally detailed, differentiated and natural images. An optimum gradation setting, matched to the characteristics of the sensor, ensures a wider dynamic range with uniform gradation. The sensor's anti-reflective coating also minimizes ghost images and reflections.
A three-dimensional colour analysis not only detects hue and saturation, but also brightness. In this way, the LUMIX G9 ensures optimum color reproduction with high saturation in both dark and bright areas of the image. In particular, this improves the clarity of the sky or human skin. A finely tuned high-precision multiprocess noise reduction effectively suppresses disturbing noise while preserving fine image details. The result is natural textures and precise details even when shooting at medium to high sensitivity.
In the new high-resolution mode, photos with a resolution of 80 megapixels (10,368 x 7,776) can be created using pixel shift. To do this, the camera combines eight consecutive images with minimal sensor shift to create a photo with a higher resolution. This can be saved not only in JPEG format but also in RAW format directly in the camera. The new high-resolution photo mode is ideal for static objects and landscape shots from a tripod.

2.Double image stabilization by camera and Lens
To enable stable freehand shots with even longer exposure times, Panasonic has further perfected the Body I.S. (Body Image Stabilizer) of the LUMIX G9. A newly developed algorithm captures motion information not only from a gyro sensor, but also from the image sensor and an acceleration sensor. This makes it possible to detect and compensate for camera shake more accurately. In particular, movements with a characteristically low frequency are suppressed even more effectively.
By combining B.I.S. (Body Image Stabilizer, 5-axis) and O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis), the 5-axis Dual I.S. of the LUMIX G9 compensates for stronger movements than conventional systems and allows up to 6.5 EV steps slower shutter speeds*1 when shooting freehand. Thanks to its compact, lightweight design, the LUMIX G9 offers maximum mobility. Together with the highly effective image stabilization, the camera enables shots that were previously not possible, for example with an 800mm (35mm KB) super telephoto lens.
The Dual I.S. works for both photo and movie recording, including 4K video. The in-camera image stabilization also compensates for camera movements with Lens without O.I.S. (e.g. cine lenses).

*¹ according to CIPA standard [rotation/tilt: Distance f=60 mm (120mm at 35mmKB), with H-ES12060

3.Fastest autofocus with reliable subject tracking
DFD (Depth From Defocus)*1 technology calculates the distance to the subject by evaluating two images with different defocusing and at the same time retrieving the optical characteristics of the current Lens. Panasonic has further developed the interaction of contrast AF and DFD technology for the LUMIX G9 with accelerated sensor readout at 480 fps, so that the LUMIX G9 achieves an AF response time of only approx. 0.04 s*2.
Thanks to the powerful processing power of the Venus Engine, the LUMIX G9 features deep learning technology that can recognize not only faces and eyes, but also a human form.
For more precise focusing, Panasonic has increased the number of AF areas in the LUMIX G9 from 49 to 225. Users can create a group of several of the 225 focus areas and resize or move them as required depending on the subject. Face/eye detection, tracking AF, 1-area AF and point AF are available as before.
The focusing options can be conveniently controlled by thumb with the integrated joystick without taking your eyes off the subject, even when shooting with an electronic viewfinder. The LUMIX G9 is equipped with custom AF settings that can be used to adjust AF sensitivity, AF area switching sensitivity and the degree of focus compensation for moving subjects. In addition, four different presets can be called up for typical situations.

*¹ Contrast AF with DFD technology works with Panasonic Micro-FourThirds Lens.
*² In 1-field AF, with H-ES12060 in wide-angle position (CIPA), EVF with 120 fps.

4.Professional continuous shooting for dynamic action shots
The LUMIX G9 is capable of shooting super-fast photo series. It can record at a best-in-class 20 fps (AFC)*2 or alternatively 60 fps (AFS) at full resolution of 20.3 megapixels. Equipped with an electronic LVF (Live View Finder) with no blackout between individual photos, it is ideal for capturing fast-moving objects. Thanks to high tracking performance, the autofocus of the LUMIX G9 never loses focus.
The 6K/4K photo functions of the LUMIX G9 offer further options for continuous shooting. 6K Photo*2 allows you to capture magical moments at 30 fps. The perfect moment can then be extracted from the 6K continuous shooting file at a resolution of approximately 18 megapixels (in 4:3 or 3:2 format) and saved as a single photo. The improved 4K photo function enables high-speed shooting at 60 fps with a resolution of approx. 8 megapixels.
The new high-sensitivity MOS sensor largely suppresses the rolling shutter effect that is common when shooting with an electronic shutter. The Venus Engine image processor also makes it possible to refine the images using "Post Recording Refinement" to correct distortions or reduce noise when playing back or cropping images from the 6K burst file / 4K burst file. For this purpose, the signal information between the consecutive individual images is adjusted. This significantly improves the image quality of 6K/4K photo recordings with fast exposure times and high sensitivity or recordings with panning.

*¹ Digital Single Lens Mirrorless cameras (as of 08.11.2017)
*² 6K Photo is a high-speed continuous shooting function that extracts individual images from 4:3 or 3:2 videos with a resolution of approx. 18 megapixels (approx. 6000 x 3000 pixels).

5.Perfect overview - OLED viewfinder, shoulder display and swivel monitor
The electronic viewfinder of the LUMIX G9 offers the best magnification in its class with approx. 1.66x / 0.83x (35mm KB). Depending on the shooting situation, the magnification can also be set to 0.7x, 0.77x and 0.83x by simply pressing a button on the viewfinder. The sharp, fast OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display offers a resolution of 3.68 million pixels and displays 100 percent of the field of view. The use of OLEDs for the LVF ensures a smooth display at 120 fps and fast response with a minimal delay of less than 0.005s. The 10,000:1 contrast ensures excellent recognizability. Even with high-speed continuous shooting, there are no blackouts in the image. With an eye relief of approx. 21 mm, the LVF also offers a comfortable overview even for spectacle wearers.
The LUMIX G9 is equipped with a night mode that reduces the brightness of the displays. This allows the user to observe the subject in a relaxed manner even after prolonged viewing of the monitor in dark situations. Another new feature is the flexible magnification of the autofocus range (3-10x) of the LUMIX G9. This allows distant, small objects to be enlarged for better control of the focus.
The large status display on the top of the LUMIX G9's body allows the photographer to keep an eye on the camera settings at all times. It has integrated exposure and makes it easier for DSLR newcomers to get used to the camera.
The rotatable and tiltable 7.5cm touchscreen LCD monitor in 3:2 format with a resolution of 1,040K dots shows an image field of approx. 100 percent. In addition to the usual RGB (red/green/blue) pixels, white pixels are also used to improve visibility in bright environments. The LCD monitor can be tilted up and down by approx. 270° to make it easier to take photos from higher or lower perspectives. Night mode can also be used for the monitor display.

6.Robust and ergonomic housing design
An Fn lever on the front of the camera allows you to quickly change the shooting settings once frequently used settings have been saved. The G9's thumb-friendly joystick allows intuitive AF-area control without taking your eye off the viewfinder. The control dials on the grip and the Fn buttons are also in a suitable position for virtually blind operation.
To ensure the stability required under tougher conditions, the structure of the G9 Body consists mainly of a magnesium alloy front and rear frame. The robust construction with seals for all joints, wheels and buttons protect the LUMIX G9 from splash water and dust. In addition, the G9 is frost-proof down to -10 degrees.
The LUMIX G9 is equipped with a double SD memory card slot for fast UHS-II SD memory cards. Various memory options are available. The second memory card can be used as a reserve if the SD memory card in the first slot is full. Alternatively, the image data can be stored on both cards in parallel. In addition, the images can be saved on different cards depending on the file type - RAW, JPEG, 6K photo / 4K photo or 4K video data. For example, only photos can be saved on the SD memory card in slot 1 and videos in slot 2. In addition, both slots are equipped with indicator LEDs so that the user can see which SD memory card is currently active and which can be ejected.
The LUMIX G9 not only allows the battery to be charged via USB on the move, but can also be supplied with power via USB during operation. This means that longer photo sessions in the studio are no problem.

7.Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 5GHz / 2.4GHz

The settings of a LUMIX G9 can be copied wirelessly and transferred to other G9 cameras.
5GHz (IEEE802.11ac) is available for WiFi communication in addition to the conventional 2.4GHz (IEEE802.11b/g/n). This enables a secure and stable connection not only with a smartphone/tablet, but also with other devices on site to enable smooth remote control. In addition, image data can be transmitted faster when using the 5GHz band*.

* 5GHz Wi-Fi is not available in all countries

8.Optional accessories

Battery grip DMW-BGG9
The LUMIX G9 is compatible with the new battery grip DMW-BGG9. By using two batteries, one in the camera and the other in the grip, the DMW-BGG9 enables longer shooting times. It also makes handling more comfortable when shooting in portrait format and allows practical operation using a joystick. Specially developed for the LUMIX G9, the DMW-BGG9 fits the camera perfectly. It is also robust, splash-proof, dust-proof and frost-proof.

DMW-EC4 eyepiece cup
The DMW-EC4 eyepiece cup makes the viewfinder view of the LUMIX G9 even more comfortable.

Battery charger DMW-BTC13
The DMW-BTC13 battery charger enables the DMW-BLF19 battery pack to be charged quickly at a power socket using the mains adapter supplied with the LUMIX G9. It also allows charging via the vehicle electrical system or a mobile power supply unit.
